MOT centres: keep your lift certificate current
DVSA's MOT testing guide lists "a current LOLER thorough examination certificate" among the requirements for the lift used for Class 3, 4 and 5 underside inspection.

We record every lift's due date and contact you before it runs out

You get a written report for each lift, ready to keep with your MOT records

New ATL or MOT lift fitted? It needs a thorough examination before first use, and the installer can't do it
Which one are you?
How often does garage equipment need examining?
Vehicle lifts (2-post, 4-post, scissor, MOT lifts): every 6 months is HSE's recommendation and industry practice, because people work beneath raised vehicles. The legal minimum is 12 months where nobody is lifted (LOLER Regulation 9(3).
Trolley, bottle and transmission jacks: every 12 months. HSE treats garage jacks as lifting equipment.
Engine cranes and hoists: every 12 months.
Lifting accessories (chains, slings, engine lifting brackets): every 6 months.
Axle stands and props: inspected every 12 months.
New or relocated lifts: before first use, because a lift's safety depends on how it's installed (LOLER Regulation 9(2).
Your servicing company shouldn't sign off its own lifts
Most garages have their lifts serviced by the company that supplied them. That's completely fine BUT the thorough examination is the check on that servicing, and the Garage Equipment Association's own guidance is clear:
-
The engineer who installed a lift can't carry out its first thorough examination
-
The person who services a lift can't carry out its thorough examination
PULO doesn't sell, install, service or repair lifts. We examine them, so nothing gets missed or waved through. Read why independent examination matters.

The same engineer every visit, who gets to know your workshop

Booked around your bays, not a slot that suits a national schedule

A fixed price per item, visible on its own line, not inside a premium

Car lifts in detail
Vehicle lifts are the main event in most workshops, and they get the closest look. Two-post, four-post, scissor and MOT lifts are all covered: see our car and vehicle lift inspections page for more.
If we find a defect:
-
Danger now: we tell you on the spot, and the lift stays out of use until it's fixed (LOLER Regulation 10)
-
Serious risk of injury: the law requires us to send a copy of the report to the enforcing authority too
-
Everything else: listed with a date to fix it, so you know what's urgent and what can wait
We don't do repairs, so a defect is reported because it's there, not because there's work to sell. Your servicing company quotes, and you decide.
Is your inspection bundled with an insurance policy?
